Inception
In 2009, Alexa’s close mentor figure, Susan Wehle, passed away on the Flight 3407 plane crash in Clarence Center, NY. Alexa chose to take this tragedy and honor Susan’s legacy the best way she knew how. She wanted to do something that would make Susan proud by continuing to touch peoples’ lives as Susan touched hers.
Susan was an advocate for cross-cultural dialogue and co-existence. As Alexa reflected on the world’s current state, she realized that in a world filled with so much intolerance of others based on our differences, we must respond by affirming diversity as a strength through kindness and acceptance. In order to stop the spread of intolerance, change must occur. Instead of merely being present, we must be active. Alexa was willing to take on the responsibility in order to make a better society for our future. With this driven mindset to end hate while honoring Susan's legacy, Alexa established Rocks of Unity™ when she was twenty years old in Buffalo, NY in order to end the ever-growing issue of intolerance by spreading kindness, acceptance, and strength in diversity. Since inception on January 8th, 2017, Rocks of Unity™ has grown from one school here in Buffalo to an outreach of over twenty-five different countries and over thirty-five different states.
In addition to Rocks of Unity™ workshops, Alexa regularly posts a Daily Dose of Kindness on Rocks of Unity’s Facebook and Instagram pages to spread kindness on a digital platform. These are positive quotes which speak on one of the values of Rocks of Unity™. She then writes a corresponding paragraph to elaborate. Her intent in doing so is that although we can be physically distant from one another, we are connected now more than ever—virtually. Values of kindness, acceptance, unity, and strength in diversity are everlasting and need to be continually spread daily. Alexa’s hope is that if someone reads a Daily Dose of Kindness to begin their day, those positive values will become a ripple effect.
Alexa also established a branch of Rocks of Unity™ called Rocks of Unity™ Rock Stars. Through these endorsements, celebrities also decorate a rock to represent their identity in solidarity with the foundational values of the brand. Kindness is a human value and is not dictated by social status. Some of these participants include Harry Connick Jr., Ryan Seacrest, Kelly Ripa, Ellen DeGeneres, Michael Bublé, Kristin Chenoweth, Andy Cohen, David Boreanaz, Theresa Caputo, and Shoshana Bean.
